The Daily Donut Day 103- Wingnuts Dutch Crumble donut

WINGNUTS DUTCH CRUMBLE DONUT

When I spotted this donut in the display case at Wingnuts Donuts Shop at 1207 Mt. Hermon Rd in Salisbury(410-546-4780) I was intrigued. I had never heard of a Dutch Crumble Donut and there was only one left, so it must be good!
The Dutch Crumble Donut is an old fashioned /sour creme style cake donut that is dipped in honey glaze, then topped with vanilla icing and apple cinnamon crumble.
My oh my! That is a good cake donut! Texture is what makes this donut sooo good! The nooks and crannies of the old fashioned donut hold extra honey glaze so you get sweet vanilla honey apple cinnamon crumble taste in every bite! WOW!
You will need a plate with this donut because you will want to catch every little crumble! I literally licked my plate clean!

JUDITH'S BIRTHDAY

Judith is one of our Designers at BRF(http://www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com/). She has been an Interior Designer for longer than she cares to remember, but she is also a Pastry Chef, so she appreciates a good donut! Judith is known for her large collection of designer eye glasses(she has a pair to match every outfit) and matching Dansko clogs(http://www.dansko.com/). I decided to create a special "designer donut" for Judith.

JUDITH'S DESIGNER DONUT GOGGLES
(Judith- Do you have a pair of shoes to match these?)

I think we should all look at the world around us through "Donut Goggles". The world would be a better place!
Happy Birthday Judith!

The Daily Donut Day 102- Fractured Prune Dirty Banana Donut

FRACTURED PRUNE FRIDAY!

FRACTURED PRUNE DIRTY BANANA DONUT

A Dirty Banana makes a GOOD donut! This is the standard HOT Fractured Prune cake donut with banana glaze and Oreo(www.nabisco.com/oreo) Cookie Crumbles. It's chocolaty, it's bananay! The only way this donut could be really dirty is if you dropped it on the floor. And let me tell you, I would still eat it! I visit the nice people at my local Fractured Prune at1303 S Salisbury Blvd(410-546-9899) early every Friday morning. You can check out your local "FP" at http://www.fracturedprune.com/.

DIRTY BANANA MIXED DRINK

1 oz creme de cacoa
1 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Crush 6 ice cubes in a blender. Add liqueurs and ice cream. Blend until the consistency of a milkshake. Garnish to your liking.

The Daily Donut Day 101- Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Glazed Donuts

MARTHA'S VINEYARD GOURMET CAFE & BAKERY

I am blessed to have a great group of friends and family who not only indulge me this donut blog, but many times help me with ideas and in procuring donuts!
One of my best helpers is my co-worker at BRF(http://www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com/) Caroline(see Donut Day 9). If you need to get something done, check with Caroline- this girl has CONNECTIONS!

Thanks Caroline- You rock the DONUTS!

On a recent trip to visit to her parents on Martha's Vineyard(http://www.mvy.com/), Caroline was able to visit one of The Vineyard's oldest and most loved bakeries and even better, she was able to smuggle a couple of their finest glazed donuts back home to me!! All this while Hurricane Earl was bearing down on Martha's Vineyard! Caroline, you risked your life for me and the donuts! I will forever be indebted!

Martha's Vineyard Gourmet Cafe & Bakery is located at 5 Post Office Square in Oak Bluffs, MA(508-693-3688) is the home of Back Door Donuts. After the bakery closes in the evening, you can still buy fresh donuts at the back door of the bakery from 9pm until 12:30 AM. Ready for a late night donut run?!

These glazed donuts made it all the way from Martha's Vineyard to my belly during a hurricane! They were still GOOD! The glazed donut is yeast raised, but has a nice "cakey" taste. No wonder people wait by the back door for these donuts!

Caroline picking up donuts at the "Back Door!"
Thanks again to Caroline- I owe you BIG!

The Daily Donut Day 100- T. S. Smith's Apple Donut

                          DONUT DAY
!

WOW! 100 days and over 100 donuts! Believe it or not, I am still not sick of donuts. Melissa, the girls, and all my friends are by now. Just how many donut stories can you listen to. Well guys, only 265 more days and donuts to go. On June 3rd, 2011(National Donut Day 2011) Mel and I plan to get married at VooDoo Donuts(http://www.voodoodoughnut.com/) in Portland, Oregon. Until then, I will keep eating donuts and continue writing about these beautiful little round circles of LOVE!

I remember visiting T. S. Smith & Sons at 8899 Redden Rd in Bridgeville, DE(302-337-8271) many times as a kid with my Pop Pop, Howard Phillips. We would buy apples, vegetables, hard candy, and fresh apple donuts! Pop Pop would pick an apple out of each basket and take a big bite before he made his selections. Don't know if I would try that today, but I do know they will provide samples!

The T. S. Smith Farm(http://www.tssmithandsonsfarm.com/) was started in Bridgeville, DE(http://www.townofbridgeville.net/) in 1907 by Mr. Thomas Sterling Smith and is now one of the two surviving orchards in Delaware. T.S. Smith and Sons is a proud sponsor of the Apple-Scrapple Festival(http://www.applescrapple.com/) the second weekend of October every year in downtown Bridgeville! If you are not familiar with Scrapple(http://www.rapascrapple.com/), it is made from the scraps left over when a hog is butchered and in my opinion it is delicious sliced thin and fried hard!

Fruit, Vegetables, and donuts! Love it!

Day 100 started out with Shelby and I on a donut hunt in Seaford, DE(http://www.seafordde.com/). We heard one of the last remaining Mister Donut Shops(http://www.mister-donut.com/) was still open in Seaford. Alas, the old Mister Donut on Norman Eskridge Highway is now a Laundry. We will track down a Mister "D"- I promise! Since the next town north of Seaford is Bridgeville, we decided to revisit the T.S. Smith Apple donuts I remembered from my childhood. Lucky us! The donuts were still there and still DELICIOUS! These apple donuts are soft and fresh with just enough cinnamon sugar topping to make you lick your lips between each bite! Our donuts were sooo good we decided we could not keep these just for ourselves, so we decided to share some of this donut love!

I spent the better part of my young adulthood as a salesman, buyer, manager, etc. at Mitchells Interiors(http://www.mitchellsinteriors.com/) in Laurel, DE(http://www.townoflaurel.net/). This store is my second home and the people here are my family. Mitchells has been in business for over 85 years and the main store just had some major renovations. Looking good Mitchells!! It was great to visit with Roger, Doris and Michelle! Hope you guys enjoyed the donuts!

Shel and I headed home worn out, but with bellies full of donuts! I think the Bridgeville sign says it all- "If you lived here, you would be home now!" We don't live in Bridgeville, but it sure felt like home!

The Daily Donut Day 99- Bayville Bakery Old Fashioned Donut

BAYVILLE BAKERY
37238 LIGHTHOUSE RD
SELBYVILLE, DE 19975
302-436-2220

The Old Fashioned Donut from Bayville Bakery in the Bayville Shopping center next to Smitty Mcgee's(www.smittymcgees.com) is a bite from the past! This basic cake donut is anything but! The donut has a slight taste of coconut! Is this my imagination or is it really in there? I think further investigation is required. More donuts please!
The donuts are not the only GOOD things at Bayville Bakery! They also make excellent breads, pastries, cupcakes, and biscotti! Stop by and visit Jelena and Julia when you are in the area or check them out on Facebook!

The Daily Donut Day 98- Cindy Lou's Birthday Donut

                HAPPY BIRTHDAY CINDY!

One of the nicest, sweetest people I know had her birthday on Sunday! Cindy Lou has been our "Top Designer" at BRF(www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com) the last few years. Cindy has delivered over 1,000,000 in furniture each year for the last several years! WOW! She does it with grace and a smile on her face! Great job Cindy! I had to find a donut as sweet as Cindy so I decided to go with Homer Simpson's favorite:

DUNKIN DONUTS STRAWBERRY FROSTED DONUT

The Dunkin Donuts Strawberry Frosted Donut is a classic!(like Cindy). This sweet yeast raised donut is soft and fresh. The strawberry frosting is sweet and very, very strawberry. My donut is ready for Fall with its seasonal sprinkles. No wonder Homer Simpson loves this donut!

"Is there anything a donut can't do?"  Homer Simpson

You can purchase these donuts one at time from my local Dunkin Donuts Shop at 908 S Salisbury Blvd(410-749-5999), but they are much better in the six or twelve pack! Check out your local "DD" at www.dunkindonuts.com!

The Daily Donut Day 96- Bayville Bakery Brioche

Bayville Bakery is located in the Bayville Shopping Center at 37238 Lighthouse Rd(RT 54) next to Smitty Mcgee's(http://www.smittymcgees.com/) in Selbyville(302-436-2220). I stopped by this great bakery on my way home to pick up a couple of donuts, and ended up leaving with my donuts, a loaf of Armenian wheat bread(all gone by the way), and this lovely Brioche. See below:

BAYVILLE BAKERY BRIOCHE

A Brioche is more like a French bread. This pastry dates back to the 1400's in Europe. A donut's Great Great Grandmother. The filling in the picture is a cream cheese mixture. YUM! The entire pastry is sweet, but not too sweet. The dough has a French bread taste while still being soft and sweet. The cheese filling is sweet, but you can still taste the cheese. Love that sweet/savory combination. You gotta try this!

I was sooo happy with my purchases from Bayville Bakery I decided to share my donuts with my co-workers at BRF(http://www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com/). These did not last long! Sorry Guys, the Armenian Wheat did not make it , I ate the entire loaf on my ride home!

The Daily Donut Day 95- Wingnuts German Chocolate Donut

WINGNUTS GERMAN CHOCOLATE DONUT

Donut Myth: German Chocolate is from Germany.

FALSE

German Chocolate in German Chocolate Cake or Donuts does not come from Germany. German is actually a type of chocolate originally developed by, Samuel German, an employee of the Walter Baker & Company Chocolate Manufacturers( www.brands.kraftfoods.com/bakerschocolate) in 1852. Recipes calling for this type of chocolate to make cakes date back to the 1920's in American cook books. Very interesting!

German chocolate is sweeter than semi-sweet chocolate and since it is made with chocolate liquor, sugar, lecithin, and cocoa butter it is also lighter in color. Call it whatever you like, but if it is around me for long, you can call it GONE!

Wingnuts German Chocolate Donut is their Chocolate Frosted Cake Donut(delicious on it's own) topped with German Chocolate and toasted coconut! Das Schmeckt!
(That's German for delicious!)
Stop by Wingnuts at 1207 Mt Hermon Rd in Salisbury(410-546-4780).

The Daily Donut Day 94- Grandma Barbara's Birthday

FRACTURED PRUNE FRIDAY!

If you haven't noticed, I spend alot of time in donut shops. One benefit of frequent donut shop visits is you get to know the people who work in the shops and hopefully they let you in on some of their "donut secrets." The nice people at the Fractured Prune at 1303 S Salisbury Blvd in Salisbury(410-546-9899) have given me access to some of the secret flavor combinations that don't show up on the Fractured Prune menu. Sure, you could come up with these recipes on your own, they will dress your hot donut however you like, but I always like to take the learned advice of a "Donut expert." See below:

FRACTURED PRUNE BERRIES & CREME SPECIAL

September 3rd is Grandma Barbara's birthday and since she is the mother of my lovely betrothed, Melissa, I wanted to pick a special donut just for her. My friends at the Salisbury Fractured Prune let me in on the secret of this lovely and I think Grandma Barbara will enjoy having her own donut! The fresh hot donut is dipped in a mixed berry glaze and then topped with powdered sugar. You get fruit and creme goodness in every bite!
Deliscioso!
