THE DAILY DONUT 2012- RUTHIE'S SURPRISE!

Got a nice surprise upon my arrival at work at BRF(www,bethanyresortfurnishings.com)the other day. One of my thoughtful co-workers had stopped by Ruthie's Bethany Bakery on Garfield Parkway in downtown Bethany Beach, DE(www.bethanybeachde.com) and picked up some of Ruthie's delicious OVERSIZED donuts!

As you may recall from an earlier blog, Ruthie and Bobby decided to increase the size of their donuts this year. I measured the new donuts to be a full 5 inches round and extra fluffy. Nice work guys!

I quickly made this donut disappear! Who knew I could preform magic tricks?! There is always magic in the air when donuts are around. This yeast raised donut was extra fluffy and chewy- a true sign of freshness! Thanks to my thoughtful co-worker and Ruthie!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- LITTLE DEBBIE MINIS

When I was a kid my Grandfather, Howard Phillips, was and had been a Breadman for most of his adult life. PopPop had worked for several different bakeries over the years including, Friehofer's and Keoster's, but I mainly remember him working for Sunbeam(www.flowersfoods.com) because he would sometimes bring home fresh unsliced bread or left-over or"broken" pies and cakes for the family. Oh, the joy of ripping off the end of a fresh loaf of bread and grabbing handfuls of the soft warm center, then finishing off the crust
One day PopPop brought something different home after a long day at work. The Sunbeam distributor for whom PopPop worked had partnered with another bakery that specialized in breakfast treats and deserts. Mckee Foods of Arkansas whose baked good were named for a Grandaughter, Debbie!

I think the first "Little Debbie" I tried was the Oatmeal Cream Pie, but I have loved them all from the Nutty Buddies to the Fudge Rounds and especially the Swiss Cake Rolls. There is a rumor that I once ate a Swiss Cake Roll from a trash can, but that is a story for another day. Today is all about the Little Debbie Mini Donuts!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- HOCKER'S ORPHANED DONUTS

HOCKERS G&E SUPERMARKETS

Needed supplies for BRF(www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com) the other day, so I headed to the local Hocker's G&E Supermarket(www.hockersmarkets.com) in Ocean View. Hockers G&E is one of those locally owned businesses that has everything. There are two locations, Ocean View and Clarksville, and each location has a grocery store and hardware store side by side. If you can't find what you are looking for here, chances are, you don't really need it. They have everything from toys to fishing equipment, movies to make-up, even an in store BAKERY! As a side note Hockers has the largest ice cream selection of any grocery store I have seen. There are ice creams here that I have never tried- just saying.

Whenever I have to stop by Hockers G&E, I always stop by the bakery department to see if they have any orphaned donuts. What are orphaned donuts, you ask? 

HOCKERS G&E ORPHANED DONUTS

I can never pass up the day old or "orphaned donuts", as I like to call them. As much as I love donuts, I hate to think that these perfectly good donuts will end up in a trash pile. I can't help but "adopt " these unwanted waifs and share them with others. Also, Hockers donuts stay amazingly fresh for days and the price can't be beat!

HOCKERS ANGEL CREME FILLED LONG JOHN

This is a great donut and an especially lucky find in the "orphaned " donut bin. This Long John donut is filled with delicious light fluffy angel creme inside the yeast raised donut and topped with vanilla AND chocolate frosting! SCORE!

Next time you are in a grocery store or bakery ask about the "orphaned " donuts. You will not be sorry! Not only will you be getting a great deal on a great donut, you will be saving some of these lovelies from a trashy ending.

Saw a beautiful rainbow on my way home! Coincidence, I think not! I believe this was my reward for rescuing those "orphaned" donuts!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- CARTER'S MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATION

Early Summer is Graduation time. I can't think of a year in recent history that someone in our family has not graduated from something. Are we a really smart group or just a really large group? I will let you decide. This year nephew Carter graduated from Middle School and cousin Justin graduated from High School. Congratulations guys! Great job by both of you!

I know you are asking yourself, "What would Keithaccino bring to a Graduation?" Donuts of course!

ENTENMANN'S SOFTEES

Entenmann's Bakery started in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1800's baking bread and other delicious items. By the 1950's, Entenmann's was a household word, even the most popular singer/actor of the time, Mr. Frank Sinatra(www.sinatra.com), had an Entenmann's Crumb Coffee Cake delivered to his house at least once a week. Today Entenmann's is part of the Bimbo Bakery USA family and loved around the world.(www.entenmanns.com)

I took a sample bite of Carter's Graduation Donut, just to make sure it was fresh!(someone has to handle Quality Control) It passed with flying colors, but I still sampled a couple more just to be certain.

In Donut related news... Entenmann's and The Salvation Army debuted the new 1 FOOT GIANT Donut on June 1st, 2012(National Donut Day). The donuts were quickly taken into police custody and never seen or heard from again. Calls to the NYC Police Department, when answered, could not be understood, sounded like the person answering the phone had a mouthful of donut!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- KRISPY KREME "HOLE IN ONE"

Krispy Kreme will always be my first real "donut love." I can still remember my first fresh, HOT off the line Honey Glazed! WOW! Excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin!

My first Krispy Kreme experience was at the Krispy Kreme at 2401 Battleground Ave in Greensboro, NC. I was attending the High Point Furniture Market for my employer, Mitchells Interiors(www.mitchellsinteriors.com) and we were staying in Greensboro. Not everyone knows that Krispy Kreme is a North Carolina company started in 1937 in Winston-Salem, NC. Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point make up the Piedmont Triad(www.piedmonttriadnc.com), these three great cities are all within about 10 minutes of each other depending on where you are in each city. Well, I was standing in the Krispy Kreme store on Battleground Avenue staring at the HOT, FRESH, DONUTS, coming down the line right at me!

Yes, just like the picture above! If you can look at that donut line and not want a donut, I am sorry, but you are reading the wrong blog. This is what it is all about -baby! Call it Donut Heaven, Donut Nirvana, whatever- this is the mother lode! I imagined myself at the end of the line catching donuts in both hands and my mouth! I could watch that channel a l l  d a y  l o n g! That week in 1987, I think I ate over 28 Krispy Kreme donuts. An average of 6 donuts a day over a 4 day period. Thus began a long and satisfying love affair with Krispy Kreme. I love them so much, I even purchased a few shares of the stock. I figured it was a good investment with all the support I have been sending their way for years!

This light means STOP! HOT DONUTS NOW! It should be obeyed whenever possible.

I needed a Krispy Kreme fix recently, and since we do not have a Krispy Kreme shop in this locality(hint, hint Krispy Kreme Gods) I had to make due with KK's from the box. Almost as good if you put one in the microwave for 8 to 10 seconds! Once my donut was hot I decided to add a little ice cream to cool things down. If you were not aware- ice cream and donuts go well together! Do not take my word on this, you must try it for yourself, and call me when you are ready- I can be there in 10 minutes, tops! I topped my Hot KK with Blue Bunny(www.bluebunny.com) Strawberry Banana Frozen Yogurt. I call it a Hole-In-One! Delicioso!!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- THINGS ARE GROWING AT RUTHIE'S

RUTHIE'S BETHANY BAKERY

The 2012 season is in full swing at Ruthie's Bethany Bakery on Garfield Parkway in Downtown Bethany Beach, DE(www.bethanybeachde.com). Ruthie's is one of the fastest growing bakeries in the area, supplying deserts and baked goods to many local restaurants. Ruthie is a past winner of the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival, she and husband, Bobby are two of the nicest and hardest working people at the BEACH! Congratulations on your success, it is well deserved!

When I stopped by Ruthie's recently, I could not help but notice the donuts looked BIGGER! I asked Bobby and he confirmed my observation. The plan this season is to advertise their donuts as the biggest and best at the Beach! I measured this GIANT Chocolate Frosted Yeast Raised Donut at a full 5 inches. That is 2 inches larger than the most donuts you will find. WOW! I pride myself in being able to eat the average donut in just 2 big mouth bites, I can usually shove a hot Krispy Kreme down in 1 bite! These donuts are easily 5 bites for me, yet still light and curiously fluffy. AWESOME!

The above is Ruthie's signature Pink & Bright Blue Sprinkle Donut. I brought this one home to share with Shelby. The "bald spot" on top is where Shelby decided to take a lick before I could snap the picture. She loved it!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012- VINNY'S LA ROMA ZEPPOLI

Growing up on the Maryland Eastern Shore in the 70's in a Welsh/Irish/English family, we very rarely ate Italian food. Sure, I was familiar with pizza and spaghetti with meatballs, we even had pasta "shells", but they were used to make fancy macaroni and cheese. It was not until I started working part-time, driving, and dating that I realized the local pizza restaurant had much more to offer.

I had been to La Roma for pizza many times, I think I even had my 10th birthday in the building when it was a Roy Rogers restaurant, but I had never tried any of the other foods. My first foray into the realm of "not pizza" was the CALZONE. In 1982 you could buy a calzone, basically an inside -out pizza with ham, ricotta, mozzarella, and sauce on the side for $5 bucks including a pitcher of Coke! The same $5 bucks would also fill the gas tank of my 1967 Mustang and let me drive all week! The perfect date meal! I actually had a little money left over for desert and Vinny Bellia, owner of Vinny's La Roma, introduced me to the....

For those who may be unfamiliar, the Zeppola(Zeppoli is the Southern Italian spelling) is an Italian donut sometimes called a sfinge or Bigne' di S Giuseppe(St. Joseph's Day Cake). Prayers to St Joseph prevented a famine in Sicily during the Middle Ages. St. Joe is also the patron saint of all pastry chefs. I knew I liked that guy!

Vinny's La Roma Zeppoli

These light puffy pastries make a great desert. They are lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar and sometimes even drizzled with a little chocolate sauce. Always brought to the table fresh and hot! I have been eating these guys for over 30 years! More than one Zeppoli or Zeppola is Zeppole! That is the way I like them, in groups! I had to share these with Shelby and I think she ate two and only left one for me. I know where I can get more! THE DAILY DONUT 2012- DUNKIN STYLE!

                DUNKIN DONUT DAY 2012!    

On National Donut Day 2012 I had to work at BRF(www.bethanyresortfurnishings.com). I am still waiting to be paid to eat donuts and visit donut shops all around the world! Wouldn't that be COOL! Well, a guy has to have a dream!

Fortunately for me, there is a still fresh and new Dunkin Donuts in Bethany Beach in the Midlesex Plaza at 33292 Coastal Hwy, better known as Rt1S. Give them a call 302-539-1454 or track them down at www.dunkindonuts.com. 

The staff at this Dunkin Donuts was super friendly and excited about Donut Day. I always get a little goofy and excited in donut shops(kid in candy store = Keithaccino in donut shop), so these ladies were very helpful in selecting my donuts(as seen below) and even introduced me to a new long awaited DD introduction.

The above donut has always been one of my favorites, but sadly, it has been long left out of the DD delicious donut line-up. No longer, this delicious double chocolate angel creme-filled beauty was introduced to coincide with the opening of the new movie, Men in Black III(www.meninblack.com).    Dunkin Donuts introduced a group of dark chocolate donuts inspired by the movie, I will attempt to sample each one of these in the coming weeks.

My co-worker at BRF, Melissa, was having a tough day, but when she tried on a pair of DD Homer Simpson Donut Goggles, everything seemed a little better. to quote Homer, "Is there anything a donut can't do?" I think not!

THE DAILY DONUT 2012

The first Friday in June is always National Donut Day! This is one of my favorite days of the year, right up there with Christmas and my birthday! Donut Shops all over the world are actually giving out FREE donuts! Did you hear me? I said, "FREE DONUTS!" How can you not love a day like today?! Spring is blooming into early Summer, the birds are singing, children are starting Summer vacations, and you, I , and the rest of the world can share and enjoy "little circles of love" for FREE!

Why? You ask...

Thank you Salvation Army for National Donut Day!

The Salvation Army started National Donut Day in 1938 to honor the more than 250 volunteer "doughnut lassies" who served donuts and other breakfast items to "doughboy" soldiers during World War I.

What a great day and great reason to celebrate. Please purchase a few donuts from your local shops along with your FREEBIE! Also keep in mind those who don't have enough to eat and support your local Salvation Army.
