The Daily Donut Day 49 - Wingnuts French Apple

The French word for apple is "pomme". A French Apple Donut is usually a yeast raised donut with apple filling and topped with vanilla icing. Wingnut's Donuts has one of the best soft, somewhat chewy, doughnuts out there right now. Combine the taste of the donut with the apple filling and the sweet vanilla topping and you will reach "Donut Heaven!" Sweet, soft, donut goodness! Wingnuts Donuts Shop is located at 1207 Mt. Hermon Rd in Salisbury(410-546-4780). If you have never been to Wingnuts, it is worth the trip. Stop by and try a "Pomme Donut!"

The Daily Donut Day 48- Ocean City Donut Derby 2010

OC DONUT DERBY 2010

The "boys" are at it again! As you may recognize from previous blogs, my brothers are, "The Don" Poso, "T-Dawg Timmons, "Gravy"(the teacher) Gravenor, and me- "Keithaccino." Once a Summer we all head to West Ocean City, Md to the Grand Prix Family Go-Cart Track(http://www.grandprixoc.com/) as part of the celebrations of the Summer birthdays. Poso turned 46 on June 13th(see Donut Day 14) and Timmons joined in his oldness on July 6th(see Donut Day 36). I am still the youngest and won't catch them until next year!
Race Time 7:30 PM. The sign says it all. We could write a book about what we think we know about Go-Cart racing, but tonight Gravy is ready to teach us all a lesson. School is in!

The track was ready. The cars were ready, but first- the DONUTS!

Today's donut is  from The Oceans Market at 14107 Coastal Hwy in Ocean City(410) 250-1927. This place has it all! They are a full service Exxon(http://www.exxon.com/) Convenience Store and along with donuts, they also sell beer and wine! That's what I'm talking about! This country does not have enough BEER/WINE&DONUT shops!
The Vanilla Glazed Cake Donut is race ready! Rich vanilla frosting in every bite and the cake donut has that good home made taste! Great job Oceans Market!
Time to eat the donuts!

Jeannie Faye(Mrs. T-Dawg), Gravy, and T-Dawg show off their donut eating skills, while I- having more experience- go "no handsies!"

When the Poso's arrived the real "Donut Love" began!

The Posos, Gravenors and Timmons all share a donut before the racing begins. Gentlemen start your engines!

The tracks were slick and the drivers sweaty, but an AWESOME time was had by all!
Another great thing about donuts! Dunking and Driving is perfectly OK!

The Daily Donut Day 47- Dunkin Donuts Toasted Coconut

The Dunkin Donuts Toasted Coconut Donut is a taste of the Tropics! I have dubbed this "The Survivor Donut" because it reminds me of the "Survivor"(www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor) TV series. It seems that coconuts are the main source of food for the stranded contestants. I would love to be on that show! More guy dreams!
"DD's" Toasted Coconut is a cake donut(I think I taste coconut in the cake donut too, not sure will get back to you on that) with honey glaze then rolled completely in toasted coconut. There is coconut everywhere! This one is a true tongue tickler. Love the texture of the toasted coconut! I got this lovely from the "DD" shop at 908 S. Salisbury Blvd.(410-749-5999), but your can check out your local "DD" at http://www.dunkindonuts.com/.

The Daily Donut Day 46- Fractured Prune Blueberry Hill Thriller

    Fractured Prune Friday!

Antoine Dominique, aka"Fats Domino", released his version of "BLUEBERRY HILL" in 1956 and it became an instant hit. Check it out at  www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQQCPrwKzdo. That's right, you know the song. Richie Cunningham's theme song from "Happy Days". Makes me want to run out and get the DVD of "Happy Days" TV series and relive some of my youth. Great show!

Fractured Prune released their version of the Blueberry Hill donut more recently, but this one was also an instant hit. The Fractured Prune Blueberry Hill Donut is the standard cake donut dipped in powdered sugar with a blueberry glaze topping and served hot while you wait as only Fractured Prune can do it! This blueberry thriller was made by the good people at the Fractured Prune shop at 1303 S. Salisbury Blvd.(410-546-9899), but you can find your local "FP" at http://www.fracturedprune.com/. Check them out, I'm sure you will "find your thrill!"

The Daily Donut Day 45- WaWa Lemon Glazed Cake

With it's yellow and white pinstripes, this donut looks like it is dressed for a Summer day. Lemon is always refreshing on these "Dog Days" (www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_Days) of Summer. This WaWa Lemon Glazed Cake Donut is from the WaWa at 2740 N Salisbury Blvd in Salisbury, MD(410-548-7946). The lemon cake donut(look-it's even yellow inside) has a lemon glaze with vanilla glaze pinstripes. You taste the lemon in every bite! This donut is one of WaWa's seasonal favorites, so you better get to your local WaWa and get one now! They may not be here for long! Check out your local WaWa at www.wawa.com.

The Daily Donut Day 44- Dunkin Donuts Bavarian Creme

The Dunkin Donuts Shop at 908 S.Salisbury Blvd(410-749-5999) made this classic donut favorite!. There are several ways to judge the quality of a Bavarian Creme Donut which my youngest, Shelby calls a"pudding" donut.
The powdered sugar coating should be thick enough on the outside that with every bite you get a little rain shower of powdered sugar falling down your chin, to your plate, or even your pants leg. If you don't have to wipe your face after each bite, something is not right.
The yeast donut should be soft, light, and almost chewy. This is a sign of fresh dough that has been allowed to "raise" correctly. I always have a problem with this when I try to make my own. Hard to be patient and wait for the yeast to rise.
Finally, the creme filling should be just the right amount. You will get a little on your face with each bite, but not so much as to squirt the person sitting next to you. Talk about getting a pie in the face! If it is done right, when you bite into the filling you should feel just the hint of "coolness" on you tongue. Now that is a good classic donut!
Dunkin Donuts has been making this Bavarian Creme since day one, so they have it down pat! Remember, this if this donut has chocolate on top it is a Boston Creme(see Donut Day 7). But, the Boston Creme does not have the powered sugar, just chocolate on top. I would like to see the Bavarian/Boston Combo(powdered sugar & chocolate topping). Any donut shops listening? Well, a guy can dream- right? Stop by your local "DD" to try one of these guys or check them out at www.dunkindonuts.com.
 Shelby loves her "pudding" donuts!

The Daily Donut Day 43- Wingnut's Chocolate Peanut Butter Angel Creme

Wingnut's Donut Shop(410-546-4780) at 1208 Mt. Hermon Rd in Salisbury has done it again! I stopped by today, just to check on the donuts, see how they are all doing, this donut shop is just around the corner from my house! Lucky! Well, there was another donut I had never seen before! The Chocolate Peanut Butter Angel Creme! A moment of silence please......
Thank you. And thank you Wingnut's. I have always been a fan of my peanut butter and Nutella(www.nutella.com) sandwiches, I eat one for breakfast every day. The combination of the savory peanut butter and the sweet chocolate hazelnut is a party in your mouth. Now, Wingnut's has put that combination into a donut. I may have to change my breakfast plans. The Wingnut's yeast raised donut is light and soft, the chocolate topping is rich and dark, and the peanut butter angel creme filling is sweet and savory- just right! There is no doubt that these donuts are made with LOVE!
Since this is day 43, I can't help but think of "The King", Richard Petty(www.rpmuseum.com), the greatest Nascar driver of all time. The Petty family does great things for terminally ill children through their Victory Junction charity(www.victoryjunction.org). Check them out!

The Daily Donut Day 42- DeVage's Honey Glaze

When you walk into DeVage's  Restaurant(see Donut Day 22) at 748 E. Main St. in Salisbury across from The Country House(www.thecountryhouse.com) it is like taking a step back in time. The building was originally, The Polar Bar, one of Salisbury's most loved old time drive-ins and the DeVage's have kept the look and feel of the 50's soda fountains. Cool!
The antique jukebox is there, the black and white checkerboard, and retro accents like the booths and counter stools give you the feeling of Arnold's from Happy Days. You almost expect Richie, Ralph, and Potsie to come running in at any time looking for The Fonz to get them out of some jam.
The Fonz is one of my all-time favorite characters. I even have a Fonzie action figure(not a doll) above my desk, just beside my Evel Knievel action figure. I know The Fonz would approve of the donuts from DeVage's. They have continued to make the donuts that made The Polar Bar a Salisbury legend. The delicious little cake donuts are just the right size. They can be dunked in coffee or gobbled down in just a couple of bites. You can choose from several glaze flavors and toppings. Fonzie would say, "Aaaaayah! They're delish!." The above donut is the honey/vanilla glaze cake. These donuts are so good you can't eat just one! Some one took a bite from one of these donuts and left it shaped like a "C". Maybe it was Mr. or Mrs. "C" or one of the other Cunninghams.
Stop by DeVages, find your counter stool, "sit on it!", and enjoy a Polar Bar donut! Fonzie and I give them two thumbs up!

Wingnut's Donut Shop at 1207 Mt. Hermon Rd(410-546-4780) is the cutting edge local donut shop. At Wingnut's, they are always adding new flavors and trying new combinations of old favorites. The above Chocolate Raspberry Marbled Glaze is a perfect example. Not only is this donut beautiful-just look at it! The raspberry glaze combined with the dark chocolate topping is sweet and refreshing and just as good as it looks. Way to go Wingnut's! I have figured out the best time to stop by Wingnut's to get the best selection and freshest donuts. I can't tell you, but if you stop by, I will take you with me.

The Daily Donut Day 40- Krispy Kreme's North Carolina Favorites

Krispy Kreme Donuts and Cheerwine soda together?!!
Krispy Kreme donuts were born in Winston Salem, NC(www.cityofws.org) in 1937 and Cheerwine cherry soda was born in Salisbury, NC(www.salisburync.gov) in 1917. These are two things you never want to miss when traveling in North Carolina.
If you have never had a Krispy Kreme donut, stop reading right now and run- do not walk- to your local grocery store or, if you are lucky, your local Krispy Kreme Donut Shop(www.krispykreme.com) and try a hot fresh one! If you cannot find one, call me, I will send you some. One bite and you will understand my DONUT LOVE!
Cheerwine(www.itsasoftdrink.com) is the extra-carbonated sweet cherry soft drink that is second only to "sweet tea" in the South.
Legend has it that on one recent hot, sticky, Southern night these two favorites got together and the product of this union was:
The Krispy Kreme Cheerwine Kreme filled Donut!
The pride of North Carolina(www.nc.gov). The fresh Krispy Kreme donut melts in your mouth, while the Cheerwine filling is so light and fluffy you can almost taste the carbonation. It's a tongue tickler! The taste says North Carolina, but the red, white, and blue sprinkles say- ALL AMERICAN! Grab a couple of these for a taste of North Carolina wherever you may be!
