The Daily Donut Day 76- Make Your Own Red Wine Donuts

                         RED WINE DONUTS?!
I have made apple cider donuts many times over the years using a recipe found on Food Critic Kara Newman's website(www.karanewman.net). I have always wanted to replace the cider with some other fruit juice.
Wine is a fruit juice- right?
I thought why not replace the cider with red wine and see how the donuts turn out. I will give you step by step instructions so you can try them for yourself:

INGREDIENTS:
  1 cup red wine(your choice)
  3 1/2 cups flour
  2 teaspoons baking powder
  1 teaspoon baking soda
  1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  1/2 teaspoon salt
  1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  4 tablespoons butter(warm)
  1 cup sugar
  2 eggs
  1/2 cup buttermilk
  vegetable oil for frying
Shelby is my helper today and I couldn't ask for better! Thanks Shel! You are a great Chef!

STEP 1
Reduce the cup of wine in a saucepan over low to medium heat for approximately 20 minutes. Should reduce down to about 1/4 cup. (take a couple of sips for yourself)
STEP 2
Beat sugar and butter until smooth. Add eggs, 1 at a time and continue beating until smooth. Gradually add buttermilk and reduced wine. Add flour and stir to form dough.

STEP 3
Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and flour generously. Spread dough on sheets to approximately 1/2" thick. If dough is sticky, add flour until the dough can be worked by hand. Place in freezer for 20 minutes.
STEP 4
Remove dough from freezer and cut out donut shapes. Re-roll extra dough and cut donuts again. Return to sheet and prepare for frying.
STEP 5
Fry donuts in enough oil to cover donuts at 375 degrees 60 seconds on each side.

STEP 6
Place fried donuts on drying racks lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

STEP 7
Prepare glaze by slowly adding 1 cup of powdered sugar to 2 tablespoons of red wine. Whisk until smooth. Dip donuts into glaze. Add more wine and powdered sugar as needed.

STEP 8
Enjoy! These donuts look a little green inside. I think it is from the combination of the red wine and eggs. Great taste! Try your own favorite wine!
