The Daily Donut Day 11- WAWA Cookies & Cream

Who does not love an Oreo cookie? Cookies and cream ice cream- great idea-right? So, why not cookies and cream donut? Wawa, thank you for making my Oreo dreams come true! I decided to let my coworker, Rachel, pick my donut today and since she was getting lunch for everyone from Wawa's, why not get my donut there too? I was surprised because, I don't remember ever seeing a cookies and cream donut before. I just wish I had a glass of milk big enough to be able to dunk this guy! The yeast raised donut is filled with my favorite angel cream, but it also has the chocolate specks like cookies and cream ice cream. Awesome! There is vanilla icing on the outside, just like the creamy Oreo center, and the topping is crumbled Oreo cookie. I believe this is the perfect incarnation of the Oreo cookie as a donut. This donut came from Wawa #836 at 774 Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach(302-537-2663).
Rachel, thanks for your excellent donut selection and for dropping off the squirrels in my neighborhood, they are fun to watch. Check out wawa.com to find the location nearest you. Also check outnabiscoworld.com for more recipes and information on Oreo cookies. Eat Happy!

The Daily Donut Day 10- Krispy Kreme Lemon Cake

Krispy Kreme does limited edition donuts. It is a nice way to try out new flavors and to promote seasonal flavors of donuts. This summer Krispy Kreme is "Lovin Lemon" and so am I.

Gotta love lemon! This is Krispy Kreme's limited summer offering. You can taste the tangy lemon in the cake, and when you bite into it, it's yellow inside. The entire donut is glazed, then just the right amount of lemon drizzle icing is added. a lemonade donut- Wow!
This donut is only available for the summer, so stop by your local Krispy Kreme(krispykreme.com) and try one out! Eat Happy!

The Daily Donut Day 9- Caroline's Birthday

As you know by now, I plan to celebrate all my friends, family, and co-workers birthdays this year by letting them pick the donut I blog about on their birthday.
Caroline is one of our more recent additions to the BRF family(bethanyresortfurnishings.com). She fits right in though and adds to the fun and friendly atmosphere at BRF.
When I asked Caroline what she would pick as her favorite donut for this blog, she could not decide, but said she would like a tropical type of donut with chocolate and coconut. Interesting, but not something you find in the average donut shop. We are lucky to have a donut shop in this area where you can design your own donut! SWEET!

Yes, the Fractured Prune is the place to go for fresh hot made while you wait donuts that you can design yourself. I could write an entire blog about the Fractured Prune and where the name came from and I probably will before this year is done, but this is Caroline's day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLINE!!

To honor Caroline on her birthday, I designed the... wait for it

The Sweet Caroline by Fractured Prune and Keith Nichols. This fresh and hot donut, because that is the only way they make them, is the standard cake donut with a banana glaze, chocolate chips, and just the right amount of shredded coconut. We love it!! Melts in your mouth and occasionally on your face! My local Salisbury Fractured Prune is at 1303 S. Salisbury Blvd across from Salisbury University(410-546-9899). Check out the history of the Fractured Prune and the Food Network shows they have been featured in at fracturedprune.com

Happy Birthday Caroline and Eat Happy!

The Daily Donut Day 8- Mom Mom Phillips' Biscuit Donuts

When I was a kid, okay- when I was young. People would argue that I'm still a kid, and glad to be in many ways. When I was young, my cousins and I spent many weekends at my Grandparents' farm between Delmar and Mardela Springs. I am the oldest grandchild, so for a few years of my childhood my Aunts Linda and Nancy and my Uncle Jimmy were still living at the house. All these people made for a pretty full house, but in a good way. We all went to the Hebron Carnival, Sang "off key" while Jimmy played the old upright, and I went along on several of my Aunts' and Uncle's dates. But, this blog is about donuts. I would be glad to tell the old stories another time.
Our favorite breakfast, when we were allowed to choose was a big batch of Mom Mom's biscuit donuts. Powdered sugar and cinnamon sugar!!
We would all beg Mom Mom to make these donuts every time we stayed over. I think my aunts and uncle liked it when I stayed, because they knew since I was the first grandchild, Mom Mom would make the donuts for me. Thanks Mom Mom- Love and miss you!

Well, my twins Emily and Lindsay were raised on these donuts and are experts in making them by now. Shelby likes to help and is our perfect taste tester. She loves donuts as much as Daddy. So for today's blog, we have decided to share the secret and show you how to make our Mom Mom's donuts. And the best part of the secret- it's EASY!!

Step1- Procure some type of pop-up canned biscuits. We got Pillsbury Grands because they are big and fluffy. You can use any, other than the layered biscuits, they will flake apart while frying.

Step 2- Lay your biscuits out on a flat surface and punch out the centers to make a hole. We use the lid from vanilla extract because that is what Mom Mom used and you don't mess with tradition at our house. Four small donut holes can be rolled together to make one large. You could also cut the biscuits in half , roll, and make a batch of all holes- but this is a DONUT blog.

Step 3- Heat enough oil in a pan to allow the donuts to float. Melissa let us use her Suzanne Somers Deep Fryer, but a couple of inches of oil in a high-sided frying pan would work just as well.
Step 4- Fry donuts approximately 1 minute on each side until fluffy and golden brown. Remove from oil and dry on paper towels.
Step 5- Now for the fun part. Place 3 or 4 donuts in a paper bag, careful not to overfill. You do not want your bag to break. Add a generous amount of topping. We use powdered sugar for one bag and a cinnamon sugar combination for another. Be creative and try other toppings if you choose. Flavored powered sugars are now available. Next, shake it like a Polaroid picture! As you can see, Lindsay and Emily are shaking Ninjas and may be rented out for a small fee.
Step 6- Add any additional toppings and decorate. As you can see, Shelby likes the sprinkles!
Step 7- Share and enjoy! You are a donut maker!
For more recipes with pop-up biscuits visit pillsbury.com. Special thanks to Emily, Lindsay, and Shelby Nichols for all your help. Love you girls!!

The Daily Donut Day 7- Michael's Birthday

mensch (m nsh) n.- good person: somebody, good, kind, decent, and honorable. (see picture below)
Imagine that! I looked up the Yiddish word "mensch" in the dictionary and there was Michael Denofrio's picture. Such a great definition of a great friend, although  the pronunciation with my Eastern Shore accent would take away some of the reverence.
JUNE 7TH IS MICHAEL'S BIRTHDAY!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL!
I have decided as part of this donut blog to honor friends birthdays by eating their favorite donut on their birthday and if possible, sharing a donut with that person.

Michael's favorite donut is the Boston Creme. The donut pictured is from Dunkin Donuts at 908 S. Salisbury Blvd.(410-749-5999)
In preparation for today's blog a question was raised that I don't think I had considered before.
What is the difference between a Boston Creme donut and a Bavarian Creme donut?
Does anyone know? I don't think I had thought about it before, I just figured different donut shops named their donuts how they chose. My youngest daughter, Shelby, calls these donuts with "pudding" and these are also her favorite. She likes to dig the pudding out with her finger.
With apologies to Boston and Bavaria, I have decided the best description is as follows. A Boston creme donut is a yellow creme filled(pudding) donut with chocolate icing on one side, similar to a Boston Creme pie. A Bavarian creme donut is the same donut, but with powdered sugar on the outside instead of chocolate. Many donut shops use the same filling for both, some do not. Both donuts are delicious. Glad we were able to clear that up. Michael, I enjoyed your donut and we all learned some Yiddish. Find your local Dunkin Donut shop at dunkindonuts.com.
And now some pictures of Michael! We love ya!

The Daily Donut Day 6- Hockers/ G&E

Powdered Sugar Yeast Raised Donut!! This is about as basic as you can get. I am sure when the first donut was created- and it was good! But plain. After a while people started thinking, what can we do to make this even better. First, the sugar raised, then cinnamon sugar, but wait how about "powdered sugar"? And it was REALLY GOOD! Thank you donut creators for the gift of the powdered sugar donut, if you could tell me how I can keep all that powdered sugar off my face, shirt, and pants, that would be even better.

If you have never been to a Hockers/G&E- it is worth the ride.  Side by side grocery/ hardware/ sporting goods stores at two locations near the beach in Clarksville and Oceanview, DE.  They have everything but a place for me to sleep and that is why I don't live there. Plus they make their own donuts on the premises everyday which makes me wish they had a place for me to sleep, so I could live there. My daughter, Lindsay, worked at the Hockers in Oceanview her first summer after high school. She learned all aspects of the grocery business including cutting meat, the cash register, and stocking shelves. All, that is, except how they make these fantastic donuts. Linds, I may have to send you back to Hockers to learn the donut making secrets.
I do know, you can never go wrong with a fresh powdered sugar donut and Hockers does theirs up right. The yeast makes it light and fluffy and the powdered sugar makes it- oh so tasty! If you do get powdered sugar on your shirt, just rub it in and if you need something sweet later, you can chew on that part of your shirt. That's what I do! Visit the Hockers/G&E where Lindsay worked and ask the employees if they remember her at 30244 Cedar Neck Rd in Oceanview or online at hockersmarkets.com. Eat Happy!

The Daily Donut Day 5- Layton's Dip'N Donuts

Always time for donuts!! Dontcha love it!!

Got a call early this morning from my daughter, Emily. Seems she had been working in Ocean City all night, was just finishing her shift, and getting ready to head home for some well earned shut eye. Now what do you think my wonderful worn-out daughter did, but offer to stop by Ocean City's legendary donut shop, Layton's Dip'N Donuts and bring me a fresh dozen all the way in Bethany Beach. Score!! I'm not quite sure what I did right during her 24 years, but I'm taking full credit for it now! Thanks Em! Love you and all your donut delivering sweetness!
The donut that jumped out of the box at me was this cute little cake nugget with blueberry crumbles. Layton's makes great chewy yeast donuts along with their filled and cake donuts and has a great breakfast menu to boot. Unfortunately for me, this donut tasted like two more. If you count all the donuts I have eaten since Tuesday, I am approximately two weeks ahead of this blog- and loving every minute of it!! Guess we will find out July 1 if these guys are adding on any extra pounds.
When you are in Ocean City, you must stop by Layton's Family Restaurant and Dip'N Donuts on the corner of 16th St and Philadelphia Ave. (410-289-6635)

The Daily Donut Day 4- National Donut Day cont.

Happy Donut Day 2010!! As you can now see by the header, I decided to celebrate National Donut Day by visiting my local Dunkin Donut shop at 908 S Salisbury Blvd in Salisbury.(410-749-5999)

National Donut Day was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a fundraising event to honor the Salvation Army volunteers who had offered home cooked to meals to our soldiers fighting overseas during World War 1. Legend has it the ladies cooked many different breakfast items for the soldiers, but the most popular was the down home donut. Donuts were fried in whatever was available to hold the oil over a open fire. Many times metal trash cans or even the soldier's helmet was used as the pot in which to cook the donuts. And those boys ate them up!

National Donut Day is the day when many donut shops offer free donuts(1 per customer) or free donuts with a beverage purchase. How can you go wrong with that deal. I do know October is national donut month, but I'm not sure what kind of freebies are available then. I will get back to you on that. My choice from my  Dunkin Donut shop on National Donut Day wasthis lovely sugar raised lemon jelly filled. Looks just like a sunny day, doesn't it? I actually let my server at the "DD" decide and I must say he made a great choice. The sugar on the outside is just right with the tanginess of the lemon jelly and the melt in your mouth freshness. A little taste of sunshine, perfect for the beginning of summer. I hereby declare National Donut Day, the first Friday of June, will from this day forth be the official first day of Summer!! All those with me say- AYE!!

How could I celebrate National Donut Day without forcing my coworkers at bethanyresortfurnishings.com to eat donuts with me. A special thanks to all those who chose to participate. Donuts for everyone!Michael had his favorite chocolate with Bavarian creme. We will revisit this one on his birthday coming up soon!Karin, with an "i" had a marble frosted. Sweet!! I think I did force this on her a little. Sorry.Mama Nicole and "Baby" Shaw enjoyed a Homer Simpson(strawberry iced w/sprinkles. Doh!
Thanks to all! I hope everyone had a great National Donut Day! Stop by your local "DD" or visit at dunkindonuts.com and Eat Happy!

The Daily Donut Day 3 -"Giant Donuts?!!"

Not long ago I got a call from Melissa's sister Julie. I remember it was one of the big snowstorms last winter and Julie's kids were at our house sledding our hill. Julie told me to get ready because she was on her way over and was bringing me a big surprise of "giant donuts". Wow! In my mind I imagined a donut approximately the size of my head or at least the size of a frisbee. Wouldn't that be cool?!!
Well, when Julie arrived, we all gathered around as she placed the donuts in the center of our dining room table. I have never been disappointed by a donut, but I remember thinking to myself that those donuts, while thick, fluffy, and beautiful, did not look any larger the average donut shop donut. When I politely mentioned this to Julie, very politely, because I did not want to make anyone think I didn't want to partake of these lovely orbs. I was informed that "giant" donuts meant from Super Giant or Giant Foods, not necessarily that the donuts were giant in size. Still delicious though.
This is the Giant donut I had the pleasure of eating today. This is a yeast raised donut with vanilla icing. The yeast makes this donut extra tall and airy. This guy was approx 2inches thick and melt in your mouth delicious. These donuts are made daily at the Bake Shop inside your local Super Giant. Check them out at giantfood.com. I must say, even though these donuts were not quite as big as my head they do have a "giant" taste.

I dedicate today's blog to the memory of Judith Amanda Pilgrim Nichols Godwin, who would have been 44 today. Mandy is the mother of my beautiful daughters Emily and Lindsay. I know if she had picked, I would have eaten a Shipley Do-nut today and I promise to to do a Shipley Do-nut blog before my 365 days are done. We love and miss you Mandy!!
